My SO will be in Cologne for an extended work visit. She is into the wines this bored likes to drink but isn't as fussy as I (us) are about them. Restaurants, culture, wine shops etc. recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
can't help with wine and food but tell her to check out Kölner Dom. if you can still "hike" up to the top of the spire, she should go for it. the views are unreal.
My favorite restaurant is Le Moissonier. The most unlikely ** Michelin place, a small Bistro with a very lively atmosphere. Very good and not too expensive disorderly wines. Needs advance reservations
A place I have not been yet but would love to go is 485. Neapolitan pizza and an amazing German wine list
Koelner Weinkeller http://www.koelner-weinkeller.de is a very good wine store.
Some of the Brauhauses like Frueh am Dom are pretty good for local food and some Koelsch.
Apart from the Dom there are several other very important churches to see. Also the museums (several next to the Dom) are first rate, especially the Wallraf Richartz and the Ludwig. http://www.museenkoeln.de/portal/pages/2374.aspx?s=2374
The museum of the archdiocese is also interesting, great building by Zumthor. And there is a chocolate museum.
As in most bigger German cities there are very solid concert and opera venues (at much lower cost than here).
Is she going soon? We are heading into peak carnival season which in Cologne changes everything.
So she will miss the nutty culmination of it all by a few days, but she should still be able to see some of the action. If she has contact with locals she should ask them to take her for an event, it is all rather unique.
