I was in SF recently after a stay up the coast, and every restaurant was booked up because I was a dunce and it was Valentine's evening and I had planned this trip for several months with my sister and two nephews, and we HAD NOT reserved at our last meal before leaving California, which, duh. But, anyway.

We got a reservation at Aquitaine, which CMM had noted was OK, hereabouts.

The food was actually quite competent, and I had a wine I'd never had before, by which I mean something from a producer I'd never had before:

2012 Domaine Bru-Baché Jurançon Sec - Such a fine find and a treat (recommended by the attentive sommelier after I ordered a ('sssssscuse me) champagne from Agrapart and it was out). All Gros Manseng, having this cool texture, a little glycerine-y but with cut. I will try to find this and try it again. It was also good for my non-geeky sister.

Points to the sommelier for telling me and my sister that we had the best V's day dates ever (nephews Jack and Zachary, 11 and 13), and for serving Jack his first ginger beer, just because he thought the boy might like it.

My nephews are fun. They can do many accents, and are football (soccer) fans.

I loved hearing my younger nephew say, excited about something, "Oh, my absolute days!"

Firsts are great.

Last night my son had his first bubble bath. It blew his mind.

Just wait until you can start giving your nephews all their first wine experiences. First Chinon, first DRC, first 1959 Huet, etc.

Bru-Baché's sec is good stuff. I've been enjoying the Pacherenc du Vic Bilh sec from Chateau Viella - Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng, and Arrufiac. Same idea: nice texture, great cut.

Yes, very exciting!

This trip had a few memorable firsts, including first mushroom hunt, first lamb (!) and first duck breast (!). (My sister will cop to it: she basically doesn't know how to cook.) So now Aunt Sharon is the magical purveyor of tasty grilled meats they didn't even know existed.

First Chinon, first DRC, first 1959 Huet, etc.

I'm sure that's exactly how it'll go....

That is an extended pleasure. My nephew is nearing 50 and I can still find wines he hasn't had before (he's more a beer geek but he's quite cheerful about drinking wines when he comes to visit).
