It's a quote I read recently in a famous wine journal: "...jaw-droppingly horrific affronts to Australian wine..."

One wine is noted this way: "Sweet, shapeless and disturbingly long on the finish."

That's the $50 bottling. The WA rated it 90+.

When he went on his usual rounds he asked each maker to open a 2002 wine for him. Most obliged with a 1C or GC bottle. Not sure what else you'd like to know...? (The lengthy intro to the article is open to public viewing.)

I confess I like them more than I expected to. For a while a couple of years ago I found myself pulling an 02 when i wanted something sure to please (as opposed to something interesting or challenging). Recent consumption includes bachelet corbeaux (nice drink, basically mature but should hold for several years, denis makes pretty good wine from this site, which is second tier gevrey), drouhin clos des mouches in late november(quite delish, very balanced), and grivot boudots in september (this is just an excellent wine, which i have had several times, so no real note this time, just the notation that again it showed well).

I think this vintage gets knocked down a bit by serious burg drinkers because it has such tasty fruit. But as Jay will tell you that is not necessarily a bad thing. Many 02s are still a bit too richly fruited for balance (including truchot) and 2002 is not the equal of 1999 or 2010 (or apparently of 2005 but i confess to not having had too many of those), but it is a vintage that produced plenty of pleasing wines that are of an age where age has polished the wine but enough youth remains to be sexy.
