sundry bubbles... and the lessons of waiting

'02 Huet Pet Reserve (prob the 2d release) -- a bit overly rich upon initial taste, and maybe a touch of oxidation (but i might have been projecting based on fear); returning to it after 30+ minutes, it has blossomed and is fresh and long; complex and very nice with uni.

'96 Peters Reserve (what became Chetillons in later years); very disappointing at first. fat and flat at first taste; mousse still OK, but i feared it was over the hill. 30+ minutes later it was awesome; all the complexity and zest of what makes Chetillons great with extra dimension of complexity and smooth edges of maturity. but definitely still alive and not in fact in risk of demise. My last bottle, alas.

'10 Prevost BdN-- what more need one say? still youthful, but out of its baby, angles and elbows phase. this bottle didn't last 30 minutes; so who knows how it would develop with more time and air?

(followed by '01 Donnhoff Kupfergrube, which was a touch soft, but still very pleasant.)

Aha, wish you had been more patient, just in the interest of science! This used to be an ugly duckling. I remember a bottle (very reasonably priced) at Eastern Standard in Boston with monsieur a few years ago. We were puzzled by its herky-jerky nature.

Just drank this the other night at Saturne. It was nice, but I've really come to prefer Prevost within just a couple of years of release, and this was no exception. For me in the first couple of years the wines have a mesmerizing minerality and severity and after even 2-3 years the sharp edges begin to blunt more than I'd like. YMMV, of course.

Glad to hear about the Péters. I think I have some left. The last couple I had seemed pretty brutal and unready, but that was awhile ago.

those intimately involved with pierre peters are afraid that perhaps this wine will go from too young to too old with no happy space in between.

Interesting, Slaton. An 08 a couple weeks ago had already lost much of its verve and tasted much older than its years. I haven't had a very big sample size to draw conclusions from, but was a bit disappointed based on the couple other (younger) bottles I have had.

That did seem a possibility and would be a shame.

yes. the 1996 pierre peters millesieme (sp?) was simply spectacular about 4 years ago.

Sorry to hear that, Brian. I've not had the opportunity to drink that vintage, but it sounds consistent with my experiences with '09, '10 and '12, tasting on release and then a couple of years later.

When I shared my views with a Paris-based flogger of wine who is much smarter than me on all such matters, he nodded as if this were common knowledge, saying only "it's meunier, after all."

I had one in 2011 that was screaming citrus and not happy to be woken up. Had another a couple of years ago, in 2014. I didn't take notes on that one, but I don't recall it being spectacular. I look forward to the lone remaining one.

Made me thirsty. I love these wines. I checked the inventory for older bottles: 2 '96, 1 '97, 2 '98. The start of a NYC vertical?!
