A wine event for the aged

Last weekend I poured at a retirement community. There were about 65 people, predominantly women, and it was by far the best time I have ever had pouring wine. There were no snide comments, complaints or gotcha questions. Everyone there was glad to see me. I poured four wines: the 2013 Cirelli Trebbiano, 2014 Cirelli Montepulciano, 2014 Camp Chardonnay, and 2014 G.D. Vajra Dolcetto. The most common request was for larger pours. These were framed as, “Could you fill up the glass a little more, so that I don’t have to get up again so soon?”

As a soon to be 53-year-old middle school teacher, I have gotten used to feeling old at work, but last Saturday I was the youngest person in the room by about 30 years. I met wonderful people, who shared their stories and their wisdom with me. It was a good reminder that wine is for everyone, the young and the old, the connoisseurs and the novices, the hip and those with hip replacements. I hope to still be enjoying wine when I’m their age.

It sounds like having returning adult students. They know why they are there, they are interested in learning for its own sake and they are a joy to have in the classroom. And many of them have also been the smartest person (or at any rate, the wisest) in the room, including the instructor.
