Ch Beau w/multi-course dinner (menu)

Jonathan, I thought later that I wish I had asked him if he had so much 1970 because it is his birth year or if he had similar quantities of other vintages as well.

On the visiting comment, I'm told there is a fantastic (read: world class) place to stay either at Beaucastel or very near it.

Beaucastel is in the middle of the northern vineyards with nothing around it. Unless they put guests up, I don't know what anyone might be referring to. I don't think there is any world class place to stay in Chateauneuf. The big hotel is in Fine Roche and one hears it is only mediocre. There are some nice gites here and there, I think. Restaurants that are worth the tab, but none one would make a journey to go to. Really, if I were staying in the area, there are nicer places in Gigondas and Vacqueyras, as welll as numerous places to rent from owners.

I have taken that tour, and yes, the library is massive. I know they have a kitchen there to entertain visitors. I never heard mention of guest rooms of any kind. As Jonathan points out, the estate is in the midst of vineyards with nothing around them.

The last time we stayed in the area, we stayed in Villeneuve-les-Avignon in lovely accommodations. That works if you have a car, but not otherwise.

My first time in Avignon I stayed in Villeneuve; such a nice place, and a fun discovery.

The place I had in mind is quite small and private...about 25 - 30 miles from the chateau.

So, do tell. What is its name? Obviously L'Oustau de Baumanière (outside of Les Baux) is great, but is more like 55-60km away. And not "quite small" (about 56 rooms). I'd love to know what place you have in mind.

25-30 kms north could be La Beaugraviere in Mondragon, famed for its wine list, but with mediocre food for my taste. I don't know anything about the rooms. 25-30 miles north and you're practically in Bollene and it could be anything. You'd be better off, as a couple of people have said staying in one of the swanky places in Villeneuve.

do the faded glory thing at stay at hotel mere germaine smack in the middle of chateauneuf du pape. think of the bugattis and bentleys parked out front in the 30's. lovely terrace with views to the south.
