the average french buys their wine a carrefour, supermarche, whatever, so yes, their opinion of muscadet will be poor at best. the few that make the good stuff have the american market--or they'd be out of business. these few that make good muscadet are a teensy fraction of the overall production.
i've been told by local french vignerons that the average french person thinks about as much about the wine they buy as they do about bottled water.
