NWR: Pizza and bagels in NYC

Interesting re the Black Seed vote. I've only (until this AM) had their poppy seed bagels at Murray's Cheese and enjoyed them a lot: genuine bagel density, flavor and chewiness. Today i tried sesame; i hope it was just stale, b/c it was flabby, boring and bad.

Interesting, I only tried them once and ended up throwing most of the bagel away. Maybe I got one of the bad batches?

NYC is undergoing a pizza renaissance.

Only a couple of years ago, the new young guns included Motorino, Keste, Company (Co.) and Artichoke Basil.

Now, to those, add Roberta's, Speedy Romeo, Emily.

Franny's has terrific pizza and is a fun place too. Lucali's is reputed to be great also, but I haven't been yet. Jay Z and Beyonce eat there a lot, I'm told, and they're also made to wait in line, allegedly.

Marta is the new(ish) pizza restaurant from the Danny Meyer group (Union Square Cafe, etc.).

If she doesn't mind waiting for hours, Di Fara is outstanding.

I also prefer reheat slices to fresh pies.

Just when you think you know every horrible secret in your friends' various closets...

If you were on Facebook, you would've seen the big discussion about this some time ago, Herr Cod. I love the crispness of a reheat slice and the overall texture of the slice better than from a fresh pie, which is goopier and suffers from the dreaded tip drip.

Once again, I thank the Noodle for never being on Facebook. A serious argument that reheated leftovers are better than fresh-baked would probably have killed me.

You've never had stew before? Or Lasagna? Always better the 2nd go-round.

What does that have to do with pizza?

I can sort of see Brad's argument maybe applied to the old-school Nyc street slices. But if we're talking actual pizza with actual ingredients, the degradation in texture and flavor begins shortly after emerging from the oven.

The tip drip is only a defect on account of some people's bizarre insistence that pizza should be eaten with one's hands. Civilized people who have learned to use utensils have no problem deriving the maximum possible enjoyment from a fresh slice of pizza - and can even touch doorknobs, use their phones, or shake hands without leaving pizza grease everywhere.

Sure, but no one that eats pizza with utensils should run for political office with any expectation of winning. It makes you seem removed from humanity.

you referring to Jon Stewarts Pizza rant?

I am referring to John Kasich eating pizza with a fork and knife at a campaign event before he dropped out of the race. He received some negative attention for it. Not sure I recall Stewart's pizza rant - was it related?

not related but i don't want to ruin it. just google "jon stewart pizza rant" it's one of the funniest things ever.
there is political figure and a (at the time) soon to be political figure. a knife and fork is involved.
it really is a riot.

I am definitely thinking of Kasich. Is De Blasio yet another offender? If so, I am impressed that he still won the race.

Stew is not a baked good.

Before there was Kasich, there was De Blasio.

Even his friends can't defend that...

Charles Greinsky, of Staten Island, a longtime friend of Mr. de Blasio’s who was also eating at Goodfellas on Friday, said he was thrilled to see the mayor visiting his home borough.

But his face darkened when the topic of the fork came up.

“No,” he said. “No. It’s blasphemy.”

Pressed on why a mayor who prides himself on populism would opt for such a technique, Mr. Greinsky shrugged. “He’s from Boston,” Mr. Greinsky said of the mayor. “He doesn’t know any better.”

What does that have to do with pizza?

For the same reason this ("I also prefer Spaghettios to fresh-made pasta with meatballs. I also prefer Banquet frozen boxed fried chicken to that weird fresh stuff.") was brought into the conversation. Why does everything have to be so linear?
