I opened a 2005 Joseph Voillot Volnay Champans because I heard both from a real live human and from people on Cellartracker that it had been showing well recently. I also remembered a few lovely firm and focused but still plush and layered bottles of 2005 Voillot Volnay VV from not that long ago.
But, of course all of that 'intelligence' meant nothing, as my bottle of 05 Champans was cranky and did not want to be disturbed. The dark silky fruit was much finer than my memories of the relatively plush Volnay VV. And one could tell that some nice elements were there. But the finish leaned on the acidic shell and the nose never came out to play, even after 5-6 hours of air.
So there you have it.
