Grüner and Riesling

We had a few friends over for dinner on Friday night, and used that as an excuse to open up some bottles.

Weingut Christ, Wiener Gemischter Satz 2015. A field blend of Grüner Veltliner, Neuberger, Pinot Blanc, etc. White pepper, citrus, maybe hazelnut, with a bit of an herbal edge. While not intended for anything more than our waiting-for-all-the-guests-to-arrive wine, this was definitely a wine I will buy again.

Winzer Krems, Grüner Veltliner Kremser Sandgrube 2013. A nice bottle with hints of the characteristic peppery finish, but not a bottle that people returned to as the dinner progressed.

Weingut Jamek, Riesling Ried Klaus Federspiel 2013. A lovely, relatively light and mineral rich Riesling.

Schloss Gobelsburg, Grüner Veltliner Steinsetz 2006. I thought this bottle was a bit off with an annoying minty taste that I found completely distracting. Most thought it was a bit closed and disjointed.

F.X. Pichler, Grüner Veltliner Dürnsteiner Kellerberg Smaragd 2006. Very rich, 14.5% alcohol, and an interesting but not quite cohesive mixture of citrus and rocks. After a night in the `fridge it has pulled together better, and the botrytis character is more apparent. It’s overly rich for my tastes, though, making me wonder if I’m allowed to admit that I like Federspiel more than Smaragd.

Weingut Salomon, Riesling Kögl 1993. Well this is not young Riesling! The nose is hinting at flowers and it tastes of dried fruits. A quiet and graceful wine that didn’t generate a lot of comments, even though the bottle was emptied rather quickly.

Zilliken, Saarburger Rausch LGKA #6 2005. A half-bottle I will remember for a very long time. Still young and vibrant, honeyed, tasting of tropical fruits and mincemeat pie. I have a lot of 2005 Zilliken Auslesen, but this was my only bottle of the #6, which is making me quite sad.

A very important category. I don't entertain often and when I do it's not usually large crowds, so I don't buy many of these kinds of wines. But the last thing you want is to pop and pour three massively full glasses of the smaragds as soon as the first guests arrive.
