Sad news from NC

Indeed. As I just wrote to Noel, the store was one of the key aspects of my transition to the area. There is no replacement!

Yup. It was really the only place to get good wine in the NC triangle.

But not always so much.

The Cowgirl Creamery situation doesn't sound that scary. Cowgirl Creamery sold to Swiss dairy company

"Conley and Smith said they also view Emmi as having a strong allegiance to dairy farmers, as well as respect for the value of organic production and sustainable agriculture.

“I don’t have a crystal ball, but I feel very secure,” says Smith. “They’re a different kind of company. We’re a different kind of company. This one fits our model much closer than anything we’ve seen.”

Conley agrees, “This company understands the craft and traditions of cheese making.”"

Their Red Hawk brine washed-rind triple-cream will always hold a special place for some of the locals as it was our introduction to the Creamery at a 2003 dinner at Joe's and affectionately dubbed the "P cheese" by Coad.

Sad news, though, about Selection Massale and Cave Taureau.

Noel and I go back a long way in the wine business, he is a great guy and my wish is that he gets in his heart what a positive experience this was for his customers, himself, his family and all those involved with the endeavor.

I still remember popping into the store in Brooklyn on his last day, he was already leaving, saw me, stopped and sold me a bottle even as Marie was waiting outside. We chuckled over my being his final customer there.

My sympathies as well to all the other organizations and business listed as closing in this thread.

Well, that news really sucks. I never did get a chance to make it there (part of the problem, no doubt) and now never will. I hope that the end game goes well for Noel and company, and that something good emerges from the ashes.

Is it really that difficult getting around Durham?

I was surprised to read that line as well, and it was never an issue for me. But you either had to look for on-street parking (not a big deal for someone from Nyc like myself), or park in a lot behind the store, walk around the block and get validated. Which perhaps deterred some suburban people who are used to giant parking lots directly in front of all their Big Box shopping experiences. I don't know.

You may not have done it in a while. Parking downtown is a nightmare. I just tried to go see Noel and the parking behind the store is closed to "regular" parking and there are no spots on the street behind or in front. The closest parking I could find was behind Rue Cler.

This is not just a problem for Cave Taureau, but for all of the business owners downtown and we've tried to make our voices heard to the city government. The big developers and developments are more important to them, as is generally the case (hence the parking restriction behind the shop). Ask the owner of Mateo or of the former Bar Lusconi about it. Maybe it could be a shake shack?

Anyway, things are not going to get any better and it's better to pull the plug than deplete all the capital.

Selection Massale is getting out of the retail/mailing list side of the business.

That's right. The company will continue importing, selling the wines through wholesale at places many of you already know. Just killing the direct sales.

I haven't been in NC since the end of 2015, so maybe my memory is fading. But for my youngish legs, parking behind Rue Cler would not be a big deal if it meant that I could get my precious wine!

But, yes, that does sound annoying, especially with rushed schedules. And I know there is a much broader set of clients you need to address. Sorry to hear that it went this way, and also sorry to hear that some other favorites are hurting for the same reason.
