Anyone know some good places to eat in San Diego?

Sushi Ota is the best restaurant I have found in San Diego.

Jaynes Gastropub used to be good and has a nice wine list, however, I have not been in a long time.

Third Corner in either Ocean Beach or Encinitas can have decent comfort food, nothing fancy. They sell wine retail and have some decent wines with minimal charge to open and have with your meal. If you're in the wine club you will pay 15% less than sticker price and all you have to do is say you're in the wine club and presto you're in the wine club. AR Valentien, at The Lodge in the Torrey Pines area has good food. It is not cheap but it is beautiful esp. on the deck or close to a window looking out toward the Pacific. Their wine list kinda sucks so I have always bought a bottle on the very few occasions when I was flush enough to eat there. Yes I am a ltl ftp so f me

On a trip there in April, I liked Cucina Urbana as well as Juniper and Ivy. Both had decently disorderly wine lists in my view. Cucina Urbana is also a retail shop. Presumably you can buy wine off the shelves and drink it in the restaurant. The relationship between the printed list and what is on the retail shelves was not clear to me. If you are up for a bit of drive, I loved visiting the tasting room of Vesper Vineyards in Escondido. I think that they are kindred spirits with most, if not all, people on this board. If you call ahead and let them know that you speak wine, you might be able to get a more detailed experience.

Website seems pretty clear about it: "we apply an $8 corkage on all bottles of wine purchased from our shop and enjoyed on premise."

Nice list. I can find what to drink there. No vintages listed, by the way.

Had a great meal at Sushi Ota, a mediocre one at Searsucker, and a decent taco lunch at one of the more touristy Mex spots.
Wasn't really concerned about wine - I can drink just fine at home - just good food. If I make it back there I will have to do some research into the more divey Mexican options.

Give in to the reality and drink beer on the fantail of the Midway. Now that's living. Seriously!

Keith,

If I'm not too late, you might look at these casual spots:

Bankers Hill Bar & Restaurant
Ironside in Little Italy for fish/good raw bar
Bottega Americano in East Village for fun/loud Italian/new American
Bracero - Javier Plascencia's new place in Little Italy for modern Mexican
Prepkitchen in La Jolla

And I will second Sushi Ota as well as their sister restaurant in the Hillcrest/Bankers Hill area (Hane Sushi). If you're into VERY traditional sushi, I can recommend Shirahama owned and operated by Koji Kotani in a tiny strip mall in Kearny Mesa. Incredible. Tajima in that same area is good for ramen.

Anyone have more recent San Diego dining experiences? I am going next week and really know nothing about the city. Interested in most anything, taco places, sushi, good cocktails, and of course good wine lists. Any local beers worth pursuing?
