Napa-free Varietal Jamboree

When I showed Paulo what it was he was taken aback, of course. Then I asked him who in Portugal makes a Port like this and it was my turn to be surprised: he suggested I seek out an LBV with ten years of bottle age from Quinta do Infantado, as their Ports tend to be more acidic (I have read that they tend to be drier, which may be a way of saying the same thing). Seek and ye shall find.

One word association with QdI: drinkability.

I went through about 6 bottles of the 2004 Quinta do Infantado Colheita. Great stuff with the acidity I think Oswaldo would like. I’m not as sure about the 2005, the first one I tried didn’t move me the same way. My favorite Tawny port I’ve tried but really only have tasted a handful.

Love the story about the CA port.

2004 Williams Selyem Central Coast Mistral Vineyard Port 20.0%
Gadzooks, I had resigned myself, with some embarrassment, to not being a fan of Port, but this really rocked my boats and raised my ships. There was something about its gait, reminiscent of a basset hound, and the droopy twinkle of its 20% eye, that left me thinking this is a port of call to call home. Don’t take this the wrong way, but now I have to procure a bottle to take to Portugal so they can all learn what this concoction should taste like.

Whoa, really?! That came out of left field.

Quinta do Infantado . . . Seek and ye shall find.

This can't be a surprise to you.

It shouldn't have been because of the Dressner connection and my affection for João, but none of the fine Infantados I've tasted have bowled me over like the Caliport did. But now I can at least hope that the right Infantado will do the trick (not that there's much room in my life for a 20% fix).

So now that you brought 'coals to Newcastle' so to speak, what did your fellow Portonians say about it?

Two other people who tasted it at the experiment described said they liked it, but the only detailed reaction I have is the official taster's.
