Austrian Rose Rises Above

Umathum Rosa Burgenland Austria won a rose taste off decisively among contenders from France, Oregon, California, and Italy. Worthy of consideration!

Does that wine still have a crazy magenta color?

Andy, I didn't really pay attention at the time as there were numerous Roses in the taste off, but now that you mention it, I believe I do recall the color tended toward a plum color.

Googling, here is what one pundit says...

a rosé that’s so cool it wears dark glass. Something of a red wine in a white wine’s body perhaps, the signature blend of Blaufränkisch, Sankt Laurent and Zweigelt.

I just tasted some red and rose wines yesterday at Weygandt's made in Austria by Markowitz. The rose's were nice, one was pinot-based, the other a multi-variety blend; both had good body for rose wines. I liked the reds, especially the Zwiegelt. Also had a very good Anton Bauer rose about a month ago at one of the Charlottesville stores, though I failed to make a note of the vineyard or grape.

Winemaking is pretty good these days in Austria, so, as climate conditions allow, you'd expect to see good roses and reds coming from there.
