I was emphatically told it was pronounced "Orry-gun." Was I misled? (which I was also told was pronounced "mizzled")

pronunciation emphatically given to you of the beaver state sounds correct if you want so sound like a local.

what is the east-of-the-hudson pronunciation? i have heard people trying to make it sound like a noble gas. (hint: not neon or xenon). i have no idea where they were from. krypton?

oh yes, and i have yet to meet an oregonian caught on the horns of a dilemma because they have been mizzled.

Just east of the Hudson we tend to say "Ore-əh-gən." We are a traditional people, ignorant but proud, and we hew to our old ways.

Evolving from ignorance is so easy. (Pride, not so much.) Step one, get on the subway. Step 2, go (at least) one stop east(-er). (This is specific to you.) You will arrive on an island where so many brilliant people were born, like me and Richard Feynman. Surely I must be joking, you say? But no, it's true. Step three, say "ˈȯr-i-gən". Step four, repeat. (Practice makes perfect.)

P. S. In a desperate state you could skip steps one and two, but I don't recommend it.

That's how it's pronounced in Queens not in The City. But what the hell would you know being brought up on a distant island.
