Côte-Rôtie

1999 Lafoy et Gasse Côte-Rôtie Cuvée VV
The 99 fruit is deep yet maturing, which has a lot of potential for pleasure, but my enjoyment is marred by the streaks of brett flying through the wine. With air (and a bit of drunken imagination) I can sort of see the floral fruit trying to peek out, but my overall takeaway is one of disappointment.

1998 Jamet Côte-Rôtie
Starts off bright and olive porky but very quickly deepens with air and at the age of 18 is still a dark deep wine offset by the gentle Côte-Rôtie violets. I am not one with extensive Jamet experience, and I have only had the 98 once before, many years ago, which means I cannot hash out the minutiae of how this bottle showed compared to other vintages. But the dark suave fine-knit composure coupled with the brightness/roughness that I think is a vintage characteristic combined to produce a very fun time for me while drinking this wine!

Your joyful eloquence seems in no danger of peaking out, but streaks of floral fruit, when stymied by pesky microorganisms, are more liable to peek out.

Jamet 1998 is definitely a 93 point wine, drinking near its peak. It's perfect and excellent for what it is right now. And just as you described it.

Which is why I was a little bored and recently got rid of the remaining 3 bottles from a half case I bought on release.

Note, however, that if it were a 94 point wine, that would have been a whole other story.
