XP: RIP - Michel Richard

Sigh. Pete Wells' reviews for me are like the Seinfeld episode about the English Patient.

Sigh. Seinfeld episodes for me are like the food Pete Wells described at Michel Richard's restaurant.

I ate at Citronelle a few times (mostly thanks to a generous friend) and enjoyed my meals there. He seemed nice enough when he walked through the restaurant.

Cole, I've been waiting for someone here to say something with a favorable slant.

All of the many online conversations I've seen elsewhere have been favorable. Similarly, friends who knew him and/or cooked with him all have been very positive.

The contrast with the dialogue here has been interesting.

I can't recall ever meeting him or frequenting one of his establishments so I can't comment personally.

[EDITED TO ADD] JoAnne loves the detail/art/photography/reliability/professionalism of his cookbooks.

. . . . . Pete

Didn't know the man. But my culinary experience matches Kirk's. Albeit based on one meal each at Citrus and Citronelle. Both supposedly near their peaks at the time. Good but a bit underwhelming based on the hype.

I wasn't going to comment because I never met Richard nor ate in one of his restaurants. However, my second-hand knowledge echoes what Pete said: One of my brothers worked in the Washington restaurant business for many years and knew Richard. When I sent him a note about Richard's death, my brother commented that Richard was "a great guy." Admittedly, being ITB he was treated pretty well when he went to one of Richard's restaurants.

I ate once at Citronelle in DC around 2004. At the time my best meal in the US and the first time I had an experience that resembled anything like a multi-Michelin star restaurant. I also remember a feeling of generous hospitality that made it an especially memorable night, beyond the excellent food.
