Says as much about people's reading skills as it does about the Times.

i would bet a large percent of "readers" look at the star rating only. kinda like points assigned to wines.
 
Even before the digital age, the NYT was a national newspaper. Granted, I grew up on Long Island reading it, nevertheless I subscribed to daily delivery in Ithaca, NY, Boston and DC long before a computer edition was a gleam in anyone's eye.
