A pair of youngish Colares

As I said, every hand in Poker is unique in that given deal. Sharon can correct me but I don't think it is wrong to say that black aces and eights is more unique than most other concatenations of 5 cards because of the historical (if that's the word) associations with it. Among the range of unique poker hands it is more unique because there is more than one way of being one of a kind (aces and eights is unique both as a hand and as the hand the Wild Bill held when he was killed and thus is unique in two different ways and, as 11 is higher than 10, innit, is more unique). I construed your original sentence in this way and not as a demotic solecism for pretty unusual. By your protests, I take it I was wrong and thus side with Sharon.

Me calling a shop selling artisan textiles: Do you close on Sundays?
Employee: No.
Me: Great, then what time do you open?
Employee: We don't.
Me: But you just said you don't close.
Employee: Exactly, we don't open, consequently we don't close.

Oh man, that's a keeper.

One of the small ironies of living in Portugal is that my two children, ages 16 and 5, are temperamentally much more Portuguese than me, being very literal and precise in their use of language, far more so than their figurative-loving father. Sharon alluded to my daughter above; an exchange with my son, turning 5 later this month, illustrates his version of the "clash":

André: Daddy, what is larger than the Universe?

Me: As far as we know, nothing darling. There is speculation that there may be parallel universes, or that our universe may be a part of something even bigger, but that’s all speculative. For sure, we know nothing beyond the Universe.

André: (looks pensive)

Me: I take that back; there is one thing larger than the Universe.

André: What’s that?

Me: The love that mommy and I feel for you is greater than the Universe.

André (after the beginnings of a smile that quickly turns to annoyance): But that’s impossible. Nothing is bigger than the Universe; the Universe is everything!

Me (after trying to insist, only to backtrack when he was becoming stressed to the point of tears): Well, can I say, then, that our love for you is almost as big as the Universe?

André: You can say that it’s as big as the Universe.
