He made meta-comments on his activities and his profession, albeit briefly. That seems appropriate to me.

If a half-century of his songs hasn't conveyed what's in his heart, a few more minutes yapping in front of smiling Swedes isn't going to materially change that.
 
I'm not sure what Sharon is asking "how so" about? I would say the anodyne quality is obvious. With regard to the second comment, he twice compares himself to Shakespeare in terms of neither of them thinking about whether or not they were writing literature but just getting on with doing what they were doing. The only reason for those comments was a concern with how the award might be justified.

Compare this to Faulkner's more famous acceptance speech. Of course, lots of great writers have given acceptance speeches that were drivel. This pretty much fits into that category. I wasn't questioning whether he deserved the award since I don't even know how such a question could be meaningfully answered.

Sorry, Steve. Ancient eyes, fingers that respond too fast and a family genetic weakness about affixing the correct names to people are the only excuses I could offer.
 
Are you saying Steve's correct name is Sharon?

I have an older sister named Kathy, and my whole life, my dad has called me "Ka... Sharon."
