California Olive Oil

That California oil fro the article is indeed OK and I have no doubt it bests almost anything in a supermarket (not a super high bar). That is why I sometimes buy it for uses not requiring the very best oil. The sad reality is that most oils from Europe are produced with little care and most likely the advanced production facilities alone assure a very decent quality.
But at the top end I have not had anything competitive from the US.

My favorite olive oil is a toss-up between Occhipinti (Arianna) and Fontarenza (Francesca Padovani).

Georg, what did you make of the one from the Ferry Building?

ETA: Zomg, it's been a year.

That one was actually also quite good. Just lacking a bit finesse and complexity (and pepper) of the best.

(And yes, I thought just that yesterday....need to share a bottle soon)

You probably mean McEvoy Ranch Extra-Virgin olive oil, if it was the ferry building (but there is another, too, which isn't nearly as good in the same food hall). Their new oil which is released around Thanksgiving is great, however even this can't even come close to a great farm oil from the Colli Aretini in Tuscany.

It was Bariani. More a rustic type of oil and not expensive at all.

Where does one get hold of Occhipinti and Padovani's olive oil?

Sadly, I think 2016 is meant to be another difficult year for Italian olive oil producers.

Envoyer occasionally sells Occhipintis olive oils. Alternatively, you could try raiding VLM's stash.

I can shamelessly plug the Grati oils that RWC imports. I buy them every year and they are everything one could hope for in a great Tuscan oil.

Alas, the VLM stash of both has dried up...

Add me to the list of agreers. I almost typed it with the two higher up, but my fingers got lazy. I believe they do purvey it at M&D, too.
