Knoll Ried Schutt

Hoping someone might know the answer please.

Knoll's wines from the Ried Schutt were always designated on the label as Durnsteiner.

Today at work I encountered a bottle of 2013 Ried Schutt GV Smaragd which said Loibner instead of Durnsteiner.

How is this possible? I found this odd but could not locate online explanatory information.

Many thanks for any help.

I also cannot find anything authoritative. But, in browsing various online sources, I have noticed a pattern: riesling wines are named Dursteiner while gruner veltliner wines are named Loibner.

I believe Ried Schutt is a Knoll monopole with both of those varieties planted.

As far as I know, Jeff is right. The GV Schutt is always labeled as Loibner and the Riesling as Durnsteiner. I don't know the legal delineation, but i have always assumed this was something akin to Graacher Himmelreich and Zeltinger Himmelreich -- a single vineyard divided between two municipalities. (On the map, Schutt looks to be entirely between Unterloiben and Oberloiben, but perhaps the political lines run in non-obvious ways. The train tracks separate the vineyard to its south from the 2 Loibens; so, perhaps Durnstein claims the western parts. This site, http://www.vinea-wachau.at/en/mywac...neyard&cHash=f7db33cf95a2fef214dae5b54655916a suggests that sort of shared "ownership" by Durnstein and Unterloiben.)

This is plausible and helpful. It reminds me of what happened at Pride Mountain where the vineyard was determined to cross the Napa-Sonoma line and they for many years have had to designate both counties on the label.

Perhaps the Gruner and Riesling are mainly planted in differing plots of the vineyard hence the difference in municipalities.

Thanks again.

there is this really cool website that maps many single vineyards (focus on Germany and Austria, but expanding)

it shows the same vineyard under Schuett for both Loiben and Duernstein, but the grape listings show only Riesling for Duernstein and both GV and Riesling for Loiben
