Not just by Trump/Pence/Price/Cross etc.

I just opened my first pre-moxed Nikolaihof. 1997 Steiner Hund Riesling spatelese. Cork was iin great shape. This wine normaly seems like it's 4 years old. Given the hundreds of old Nik bottles I have had the good fortune to drink, I am hoping this is just some weird one off, but The Horror, The Horror if it is not.

Have to say, I've been disappointed with the '97 the two times I've had it this year. It did in fact taste old and had none of the vitality, personality or balance the '90 shows, as a comparison. It also seems to show a surprising oak edge, but I'm sensitive to that.

Opened a fantastic 2001 Hirtzberger Singerreidl last night.

Also, wait for it, drumroll please ... a very good pristine bottle of 2002 Huet Le Mont Sec. Just a touch of honeyed development, hinting at a potentially glorious future.

I had issues with 1999s and 1997s from CWC. I think they were heat damaged.

2002 L d'Or is pristine and fantastic
That wine is indeed quite good, with a nicely developed richness and depth, and still fine acidity. Although, I might guess it was something else if blinded on it.

It's a tired trope around here, but I think I actually preferred it young as it had a more brilliant, briny and textbook Muscadet personality.

Whoops. I need to clarify my comments. For some reason I read Kirk's post as the Vinothek, so my comments are about the '97 Vinothek, which I've been very disappointed in.

Someone recently told me that Muscadet has no personality. I shall forward this link to him in case he doesn't see it.

It's the Zelig of wine!

Hmmm. I don't think this was a CWC bottle, but I will try to check. Heat damage would explain this.

The same here. Have had two bottles.

that is pretty distressing too. i have not opened any of my '97 Vinotheks. Maybe i can note how big league great they are on Twitter and then sell them to the Trump Foundation.

My only data point on the 1997 Vinothek is a bottle tasted about 2 years ago, which was one of the most extraordinary young whites I've ever had. So you have either some reason for optimism or further proof that I have the palate of a yak.

^ I actually don't get the appeal of Vinothek for exactly that reason. It comes out tasting super-young, which to me kind of defeats the point of a wine aged so long before release.
