What to drink when you've snacked instead of had dinner?

Too late for dinner, but still hungry for having only snacked during dinner time festivities out. Still not clear about the food, but as for wine, I wanted something spicier than gamay and lighter than Zinfandel or Cornas. Yet a touch richer than Poulsard or Trousseau. Not as serious as Chambolle, NSG or Volnay. Voila : 2005 Stadlmann St. Laurent. Delightful. And all those things. Not for those who hate fruit --NB anti-flavor elites. But acidity (to burn) holds it all together. 12.5% abv.

Mignardises need not apply.

Interesting dilemma, Kirk, and creative solution. In that same vein, we increasingly turn to Pinot Noir from "other" regions (Savoie, Jura, Swabia). Last night it was lighter still, a bottle of Knauss Trollinger "Ohne Alles"

We drink a lot of Alto Piemonte at home that might fit this bill.

Current favorites:
Colombera & Garella or Mauro Franchino Coste della Sesia
Colombera & Garella Bramaterra or Lessona
Maura Franchino Gattinara
Vallana Spanna, Boca, or Gattinara

I've recently been enjoying some grenache from Hobo (Sceales Vineyard, 100+ year old head pruned vines) and Gramenon.

Also, comrade Eric's southern Rhônes I find to be delightful.

Heh. I neglected to mention that I had just finished the remaining 1/4 bottle of Creux d'enfer that was left over from the afternoon. First bottle of the '10 that was at all enjoyable. So maybe they just do need more time.

And I'm with Prof L. I almost grabbed a gavenat cuvée Julien, but having had a bottle at dinner out the previous night with friends, I kept searching.

What year, Kirk? I'm sitting on the '08 and '09 Juliens.

Interesting question. My big challenge is usually finding something to drink when I come home too late for a proper dinner but yet I still want a little something wet. This is almost entirely an ABV issue, and I'm usually reluctant to open a bottle of wine just for a glass or two. So I've been stepping up my beer and spirits consumption at home, in lieu of wine.

Hard on the heels of this post, I got an email from Envoyer flogging these wines ('13). Coincidence? I think not...

We drank a bottle of the Ferrando Carema Bianco 2004 this week, it was really great. Seemed to be in a prime drinking window, but will hold for a while too, I would guess.

A '13 Ar Pe Pe Rosso recently was very nice too. I guess that is not Alto Piedmonte but in the same vein.

The Ferrando was a perfect match with a vegetarian lasagna that was made with a bolognese style sauce made with shitake mushrooms in place of meat.

I got the same email and bit on the C and G Lessona. I've tried their Bramaterra before and liked it, am looking forward to tasting the Lessona.

Correct. It is Alta Lombardia, if you will.

Ooh!
It was very good, wish I could say I made it.

The bolognese tasted like it had sun dried tomatoes, shiitake mushrooms diced very finely, and I think a little vinegar.

The pasta was hand made I'm sure, layered with besciamella, marinara, shiitake mushroom bolognese sauce, herbed ricotta, Grana Padano and mozzarella cheeses.

From a couple of local chefs that run a small cafe and have entrees to go as well as cooking classes.
I love these folks.

The one i drank (at Craft) and the one i grabbed and put back (at home) was the '10. That said, I had an '08 not long ago and it was beautiful. So, you might try one and see what you think.
