Good idea. Will have to stockpile some Dashe.

Who else makes a decent zinfandel? It seems like there should be a widely available, inexpensive, unspoofed zin out there for everyday drinking. Years ago the Cline old vines had some rustic charm but the last time I tried it seemed glossy and smoothed out. And cut with syrah. Same goes for Ravenswood.

My first pick would be Hobo Wine Company. I like almost everything red I've had from Kenny, though I don't know how widely available they are. I really like Scherrer as well. And Dashe is often very nice.

I've also had a few nice heritage vineyard wines from Sobon and St. Amant, though they are more in the big and rustic style. Locally I just see them at Total Wine, but wouldn't be surprised if they were also available at grocery stores.

Probably not locally available, but I've been quite excited by the elegant expressions of Humboldt County zins (and most other varieties) I've had from Briceland and Cabot.

Not inexpensive, and on the big and ripe side but somehow pulling off a nimbleness and grace with it are Limerick Lane's wines. From my limited experience Bedrock is similar but tend to be less brash than Limerick Lane. I haven't tried anything I've bought from Once and Future yet, which is Joel Peterson's new project.

At least the previous Limerick Lane regime's Zins matured beautifully and turned into something surprisingly elegant.

Bets on impeachment?

Good recent Kathlen Parker op-ed on this in the New York constituency's local rag.

Pence as president, working effectively & in harmony with a like-minded congress and court, may not a better alternative, however, in the eyes of those now in opposition.

Political setback, almost surely.

Less likely to die in nuclear flames, though, I'd guess.

"Why do we even have them if we can't use them?"

My favorites are from Hobo the Dry Creek is about $20 but the the Branham Vineyard from the very cool Rockpile area, is a special wine, very savory and about $30. Kenny also has a lebel, Camp, that comes in around $15. I've not had the zinfandel, but the cabernet franc is delicious.

I also really like Broc, which is a different take on zinfadel, but bright and joyful and about $30.

I have limited experience with zinfandel -- mostly Turley, Ridge, and Dashe from friends/family -- but on a visit to Joseph Swan about 7 or 8 years ago, I picked up a mixed case of older zins. I still have a few, and the last one I tried was about 18 months ago. A 1998 from a vineyard I can't recall at the moment -- maybe Stellwagen? Anyhow, it was fantastic. Big but quite lively. I don't think I paid more than $20-25 for any of them. I should probably get some more to set aside.

I was trying to be as neutral as possible in my comments in the administration, because I have yet to read a thread anywhere in which politics is taken up where the tone remains civil. My feeling is that this bored would prefer to be known for its discussion of wines than its politics.

Now, now, Jonathan; I didn't say esoteric philosophical hair-splitting. I said politics. Where hair-splitting is concerned, I say, bring it on!

If there's been much political discussion here, I've missed it. If you're thinking of Paul Ryan's bottle of wine a few years ago, that was more about manners than politics, imho. In places where I do see politics taken up, the levees of civil discourse are almost always rapidly overwhelmed.

I expect there's not much political discussion because of the general political consensus on this bored and an admirable lack of desire to either preach to or merely agree with the choir. Probably, with some effort we could get a debate going between center leftists and leftists tout court. Who are you for in the French Presidential elections, Hamon? Macron? Melenchon? Who is the greater threat, the Mike Pence like Fillon or the FN's le Pen, who is a Trump like xenophobic populist, but with a sophisticated political intelligence? I bet we could get some dispute going about those questions.
