CWD: ESJ library wines

Like several of you (I would presume), I recently took Steve Edmunds up on his offer of "library release" wines and sprang for several to help him fund his new album. After picking them up on a recent visit to his new Southside condo, I opened up a bottle of the 1995 ESJ Les Cotes Sauvage the other night with some broiled rack of lamb. Holy smokes, this is a great bottle of wine! Vibrant, richly fruited, finely balanced and fresh, this would have been great to insert into a lineup of Chateauneufs, though I hazard to say that it would have stood out for its Californian clarity of fruit. More than anything else, it makes me wish that I'd been more disciplined and not opened those early ESJ wine too early (or that I'd been wealthier and bought them in greater quantity)

Nice! Great to read these notes, I should start opening some of the bottles I bought.

I stuck with the syrahs, because they generally speak to me more than the blends or the other grapes. But I'm sure I wouldn't have been disappointed with this!

Yeah, I went mostly for the Syrahs, too ('94 and '95 Durrell, '01 Bassetti) but out of curiosity also picked up a '91 Zinfandel and a '97 Sangiovese. How often am I going to get a chance to taste a Zin or Sangiovese made by Steve, after all?

Whose list did one have to be one to get this offer? Is there an ESJ list?

Jonathan,
In my own case, I got an email from Steve about it, probably because I'd done business with him before. I know from various posts to FB that I was not alone in this, but I have no idea how widespread the offer went out. Looking around there is a link for them (not active at the moment, though):

This is all news to me. Do you ship to NYC? I have fistfuls of diamonds I would trade for true sweet wine. Also, a kidney I'm not really using much.

I didn't even know we had a PM function here. I used it, but just in case, ccoad@aol.com

We had the '03 Bassetti tonight. Lovely, silky at the core with charming rough edges, gentle secondary development. Had a nice kind of iodiney thing going on on the finish that I really liked.

Do you send to Spain? I'd love it...

A few months ago I tried to have some wine shipped from the US to Portugal and the customs process was an expensive nightmare. Because it involves alcohol, I was required to hire a customs dispatcher, on top of the import fees. Not trying that again.

Good for you. I think I only had a few of them on release. Since then it's been all '01 and '05 (and mostly '05).

I've still got some '03 Wylie-Fenaughty, but none of the Bassetti. I'll be working my way through the '94 and '95 first, though.
