Now that you mention it, losses such as this beg the question of why do we wait for people to pass before we tell them how much they mean to us, how much they have enriched our lives. And BJ's response begs the answer that when a community is diminished in this manner, we have to express how much the community means to us, how much it has enriched our lives, before it, too, whittles away through death and indifference.

This question is always raised about going-away parties for people at work, too.

Perhaps we prefer to think that the option of losing someone does not really exist -- even though it surely does -- until it happens. Then, those that remain behind must assure themselves that all is not lost.
 
I remember first discovering the wine boards (specifically WLDG and WCWN) in the late 90s. I don't know if I would have checked them so avidly if not the Chris' brilliant writing on WLDG. I will admit to some disappointment after first meeting him to discover that he was not, in fact, 10' tall nor did he inscribe his words in letters of fire on stone tablets but instead was normal height and used a Hello Kitty notebook but it's possible I had built up an unrealistic image in my mind.

Since then he and Lisa have figured prominently in my wine life both on and offline and have been a large part of the reason it has been as enjoyable as it has. If not for him I might still be misusing "begs the question" and I certainly would not have had the opportunity to drink as much Montebello as I have over the years. Thank you Chris for everything. We'll miss you.
 
It was a lovely memorial for Chris today. Nice to see a bunch of the usuals there and to meet some of Chris's family and to see Lisa's family again. Wish it were under better circumstances.

There were lots of photographs and some personal items of Chris on a table, which were nice to see, but there was also a copy of the January 31st, 2000 Wine Spectator there. I had completely forgotten that he had had an essay published on the last page of that issue. It brought back so many memories as I read it. I've just tried looking for it online, but it's behind the WS paywall, though they do offer a free 30 day trial in case anyone wants to read the essay.

I'm so glad to hear that Chris had a good sendoff. I have a real place in my life for him too. Thanks everyone for sharing....

I've just seen this and am shocked. How could such a healthy mind fall victim to a fragile heart?

Belated condolences to those close to him. Chris brought me surprisingly much personal joy through his extraordinary sense of humor, quick wit and faithful reportage; the kind of person you feel lucky to be connected with at any remove. Such sad news.
 
Jesus, my first visit here in months, and this is what I encounter. Wished I had known him more than virtually; I still laugh out loud on the 10th reading of stuff he wrote years ago.
