A few last days in Turin....

I am getting a bit wistful about leaving Torino. Lunch today (see pic) seemed to capture my feelings: I am so grateful to have been able to spend the time and enjoy the city's bounty, a bit sad to leave and a bit eager to go home to PDX, knowing that we can always (assuming DJT doesn't fuck everything up) come back.

the sweetness & metallic bitterness of cime di rape blended magically with sweet, briny little cozze and perfect linguine; all bouncing back and forth with '09 Jakot, which was in exceptionally fine form.

I have sprung for them only once on this trip -- 2 weekends ago we went down to Asti &Alba and environs. It has been very very dry (no rain at all in September & October) so the harvest is small. At the (generally) very fairly priced and very great Da Bardon you could buy them to go for 700 euros per etto or have 10 grams shaved on your tajarin for 70 euros; we passed. At Lalibera in Alba, a generous (but prob not 10gs) was only a 30 E supplement so I went for that. I appreciate them, but don't go crazy over them. When they get this expensive, it is easy for me to pass and allocate that $ to a better bottle of wine instead. (E.g., the 2004 G. Conterno Cascina Francia I had at Bardon was off the charts good, BTW.)

Thanks for the photos, Kirk. I agree that 70E is too much.

I'm very jealous about all the beautiful nebbiolo you're reporting!

Dry summers are hell on the tartuffo market, but can indicate good years for wine.

Kirk, does this mean you're not doing post-Thanksgiving in Milan this year?

Ah, right. Heading to Milan on Sunday for just 2 nights. Won't be back for the "traditional" post-Thanksgiving visit this year. I hope you will be though and enjoy yourself.

By the way, you mentioned the '93 Giacosa spumante in your Veronelli post. Luogo Divino here in Torino has more recent vintages on their list. Really lovely place too; designed with sound baffling panels so it is a rare "hip" wine bar (with food) that is not at all loud. ('08 Accomasso Roche & Rochette too!)
