TN: A few wines (March 2018)

Jeff Grossman
Feraud, Eddie 2005 Chateauneuf-du-Pape - grapey, sweet, thick, meh

Franchino 2011 Gattinara - pretty flavors, a little tannic and rustic, but works well at the table

Immich-Batterieberg 2015 Mosel "C.A.I." Riesling Trocken - just like it was at the Dressner event: gluggable QPR

Anne-Sophie Dubois 2015 Fleurie "Clepsydre" - really good, substantial wine with a whiff of pretty flowers (truly!), ripe but not OTT, I've already drunk two bottles of this

Taylor Fladgate 1977 Vintage Port - Opened as part of birthday celebrations. Day 1: the cork is slightly pushed, and wet, and crumbles on the way out of the neck; not much sediment pours out, though there is a bunch stuck to the bottle; fruity still! somewhat spirity for what it is, not as glyceral as I was expecting, good but not great; pour half of it into a 375ml; Day 3: served with steak, after the old English style of port and roast beef, sturdy enough for the meat but, again, a little mild for VP; oh, well

As a 77er, I'm always curious about showings of 77s, although it doesn't sound like it's a particularly great port vintage, as these things go. Though I suppose that's a decent showing for 41.

Actually, '77 is an excellent vintage and Taylor and Fonseca made the two best Ports that year, but given the cork condition, it doesn't sound like it was an intact bottle.

I should point out that Dow's also made a terrific Port in '77, but there's a high rate of tca in them. A sleeper value, though is the '77 Warre's. The '77 Graham's can be too spirity, imo.

What Brad said, though I think of Graham's as too sweet rather than too spirity.

Their house style is a little sweeter than some of the others, but that particular vintage, imo, they came out with a lesser effort that shows too spirity.
