About 4 km. I'll be there in mid-September. Anything of vinous interest nearby?

(Not too far from Frascati. Anybody find a good one lately? Or, at all, ever?)

Thanks for any guidance.

There is a lot of diversity of wines and grapes (more than you might imagine) if you are willing to do some driving. You could be drinking some Bellone at the source, for instance. Or you could visit Colle Picchioni and the surroundes, which might include a visit to Fiorano.

I recommend following the blog (and also the podcast) of Fabio Ciarla. He lives in that area and actively tastes the wines from the Lazio. A very genial person. He recently published a Frascati report on his blog http://www.enoagricola.org

You could follow Fabio on twitter @fabiociarla If you were to DM him he would probably be able to give you a rundown of good advice. He speaks English.

I found some gems at Enoteca Belli if you're looking for bottles. I hope you're planning to visit Villa Adriana and Villa d'Este while you're there.

Thank you, Levi. I'll get right on that!

Just glancing around, I have seen that there are a lot of autochthonous grapes in use. White grapes, anyway: many makers seem to have given up on cesanese ("it grows better elsewhere") and are growing French grapes (cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah) instead.

Thanks, Todd.

Yes, this is family tourism: my partner and two of his high school friends, and we three husbands. We will definitely see the famous Villas. Bits of the Anio Novus aqueduct are walking distance from our abode.

What I'm really counting on is that all the friends know how to ride bicycle but I think none of we three husbands do. Vineyard visit time identified!

There is good Cesanese still being made.

I was at a big Lazio tasting last year, and my impression was rather the opposite regarding grapes. There seems to have been an embrace of indigenous grapes recently, producers having shifted away from the French grapes that gained currency in the 90s and a bit after.

Just one example: http://www.cincinnato.it/en/portfolio/ercole/

Glad to hear it.

I had just used Google Maps to find makers near the villa and started reading their websites. (I know, not very selective.)

And thanks for the link. Cori is about 70 km south. Doable, depending on the level of cooperation I get from the other mariti.

Also in that same area is Marco Carpineti, who makes a good wine called "Apolide" from Nero Buono.
