Impressions April 2018

Just a PSA: The winemaker for Le Piane is pouring at Vif tonight for those whose curiosity was piqued by this thread and happen to be in the Seattle area. I got the impression not many people were very familiar with the wines.

Say hi to Shawn and Lauren for me!

Speaking of cruel mistresses these wines left me confused. Barthod was the first Burgundy producer whose wines I fell in love with and have been buying since the 90s. Neither of these bottles was particularly generous which could be youth for the 2001 and maybe even for the 1996. Maybe I understand less than I thought.
I have never understood Barthod, either.
I've never understood 1996 for Red Burgundy.

Wow...does this mean the Rule is a Thing?

I mean, I think it's BS, but it seems to have taken hold.

Well brother, at least we share a love for Roally. I can't keep my hands off them either. No shame in it, though.

No impression, huh? The 08 is the one with the stuffing (yes, more so than the 10 though that is no slouch either). You might be speechless, but I like em.

Yes. These are in the market quite a bit in my area (WA) through a small local importer. Been following the wines over a couple vintages and really like what they're doing.

I wonder if anyone has notes on Le Piane Boca from other more recent vintages (2011?). I have ordered a bottle of the Le Piane La Maggiorina Vino Rosso 2014 from Vinmonopolet here in Oslo, as it is quite reasonably priced. Will report on that.

Le Piane La Maggiorina Vino Rosso 2014

Just opened this (no it isn't morning). Evidently it is Nebbiolo and 9 other native varieties, including Croatina and Vespolina. Lovely "tar" nose with earthy sour cherry notes some light tannins and a long finish - all in a 11.5% alcohol package, making this particularly light on its feet and elegant.

Along similar lines, we had a bottle of 2013 Colombera & Garella Bramaterra Cascina Cottignano last night with a smorgasbord from the refrigerator. This is mostly nebbiolo with some croatina and vespolina and is the wine we consume the most of over the last couple years. Has a similar sour cherry fruit profile with a juiciness which I suppose comes from the croatina and vespolina. Medium bodies with some floral, earth and leather notes coming in at 12.5% this is a delicious package and suits our kitchen really well.

Sounds great. I look forward to trying it, too, in addition to the Le Piane wines.

Had the 2007 Le Piane Boca again last night. Had the same soaked cork, so better handled bottles may be younger; however, this had deep black cherry fruit and lots of spicy, leathery almost umami richness without really being large scaled or heavy. We liked it quite a bit.

Yeah, that 1998 might be better than the 1995 and the 1990.

Nope (re: 1995). Younger.. I’d put them at the same level. Both fantabulous. The 1995 was ridiculously good a few weeks ago next to the ‘98.
