Ponsot

Interesting conversation while sharing the dinner table with Laurent Ponsot.

I knew how he had come to town, so I kidded him about riding here in a limousine. He laughed and said "No" he and Claude came all the way from New Mexico on their Harley. He laughingly said he didn't have to pay for hotel parking as the valet could not park his Harley so he did it.

I asked him about his new initiatives, particularly his new wine label...

Laurent simply replied that things have greatly changed and are still changing, and this, after all, is the 21st century.

He thinks Rudy's cohorts will get "theirs" at some point, maybe soon.

Interesting factoid -- as dinner was concluding, Laurent informed me that he was basically deaf and had been for a very long time (forever?). He said most of his comprehension is by reading lips...and he obviously is very good at it as I had no clue he might be having difficulty hearing.

Laurent and Claude are a very interesting and entertaining couple.

The label looks rather Star Trek. In the later series, they drank synthehol, a poor substitute.

There is an active thread on Berserkers about the new label where I posted some admittedly obnoxious posts on the topic. Laura thinks the design looks quite contemporary and that the naysayers are actually out of touch.

It isn't terrible. Wine is a tradition-bound industry, however, so it will be a hard sell.

Wait, are Laurent Ponsot and Claude Kolm an item now?
Ah. Maybe that’s why Harley closed that factory here to move to Thailand?

No doubt, since regulations are looser there. All the same, I had never taken Claude for a biker.

On the one hand, being a little creative with a Burgundy label is refreshing. On the other, I'm not sure for which audience this particular creative effort was intended. I see a fair share of modern Burgundy labels and none have been this kitschy. Only one more step to Comic Sans.

Not the best label but some of these reactions are a bit over the top. It's still a fairly basic label. Would be a different story if there were cartoon characters or some other bizarre imaging involved.

How true. Having worked briefly in a type design studio eons ago it is fingernails on the blackboard for me. Not sure if it is a total absence of design sensibility or the fact that it looks so incredibly dated.

Speaking as someone often oriented toward traditionalism and admittedly perhaps a bit biased after getting to know Laurent Ponsot personally and some of his interests, after giving consideration, I have decided I like the silver label. It has grown on me.

I would not be surprised if in this day and age similar labels become common and even mainstream.
