2009 Hirtzberger Rotes Tor GV Smaragd

I've had 5 or 6 bottles of this since the fall and there has been slight variation in the depth of flavor and interest. (Or maybe in the receptivity of my taste buds, who knows) Either way, this last bottle was one of the best from this run.

Rich golden GV cream with a nutty cast, but also sleek fresh mineral and GV verdant. Hitting on a lot of interesting cylinders there.

Perfect with gnocchi and peas, less so with cucumber yuzu and ginger, but I suppose that could have been predicted. Regardless, this fulfilled many desires with and without food, so it was a real bringer of merriment.

"Nutty ... mineral ... verdant" That sounds like a great wine to have on a once-a-month rotation. Pairing it with gnocchi and peas sounds just about optimal.

Was this a relatively recent purchase? Or have you been checking in on these when they were younger as well?

The peas from the market last week were fantastic.

Indeed. And several different vendors have them now, so the comparisons are multiplied.

Lucky. Asparagus and morels were a complete bust locally this year, leading to much gnashing of teeth. We had a very dry Spring, which I think led to the problems.

I think you will find that South Wind Produce at the Carrboro Farmer's Market is excellent, though no one can replace Rob at Whitted Bowers.

We don't even think about gnashing teeth over asparagus and morels because they never show up in our markets in any year!

(There is a tiny bit of asparagus, but mostly anecdotal qualities. Not including the one 'mega-farm' that is not worth considering.)

Naturally. I have mentally slotted Angie as the heir to Rob's throne. And I told her as much when she first arrived. Although she is not yet a true replacement, she is ambitious and has many plans and I expect even better things in the future.

They are different, but her beans and rice are great.

Our favorite purveyor is Peregrine.

I can see that. Probably the best farmers at the market, but South Wind reminds me a lot of La Tercera farm in Marin (for those who go to Berkeley farmers' markets, you will know who I mean), pushing the boundaries and trying all kinds of things most folks won't grow.

Annabelle!

She was a god-send for me in graduate school. Not just because the food was amazing (her fresh shelling beans were gorgeous and diverse, and I still think back to them when I eat Angie's). But because she had such a generous spirit and gave me tremendous 'student discounts' to help me afford to eat her products.

On the South Wind - Peregrine comparison, both are at the top of the Carrboro market. Peregrine are masterful with peppers but both are top notch for greens, although I maybe give the slight edge to South Wind, especially the pristine spigariello and recently the jagallo nero kale.
