NWR: Silence on World Cup?

No tears for no Robben on my part. World's worst (i.e. most successful) diver. But it is weird to see no blue or orange.
Yes, I was quite conflicted over that. He was no doubt a mixed bag, but a very exciting player to watch IMO.

at his age, he'd have to rely even more on playing the bully, so i'm happy to see him sit it out.

Wow, that Belgium Japan match was very entertaining, kudos to Japan for not sitting back on the 2-0 lead. It didn’t work out but was fun to watch. I guess not so much for Japan.

cracking good football. i dare say the better side triumphed, but they sure did it the hard way.

is kevin de bruyne the most misused player in the tournament so far? (aside from half of the german team)

He was well used on the last play yesterday. By the keeper. Making your point.

So yes. Why is Martinez playing him so deep? They need to push him forward and put someone else behind him or change to a four-back defense if they feel like they need more bodies in front of the goal.

Maybe the lack of energy until the final 20 minutes yesterday will be a wake-up call.

and now england finally break their world cup penalty kick shoot-out duck. whew.

way to go, old blighty.

so good to see kids on the pitch instead of dinosaurs.

they only get to win one penalty shootout, just in case they are planning another

I don't mind him coming from deep, he does that plenty at MC, he has a great range of passing and letting him face a defense and pick it apart isn't a bad idea. I think the bigger issue is how Hazard messes up the shape of the team.

Anyone know why Rashford doesn't get a go in Dele Alli's spot? I think Rashford could be a poor man's Mbappé. I love his ferocity and athleticism. I'd turn him loose. Alli is wasted out wide.

I was really impressed with Uruguay the other day, it'll be a shame if Cavani can't play. That second finish was excellent. They seem to have have a really strong spine and always looked in control.

raheem sterling--never afraid to turn a golden opportunity in to a dog's breakfast.

They made it through but I considered it a double or triple flub by Sterling. After fumbling his breakaway, I thought the space opened up nicely to square the ball for a clear shot. He is in his own head and desperate to score. Not good.

Ian Wright was on Fox stating a preference to start Marcus Rashford and give him a chance over Sterling. Doubt it will happen. Sterling is super fast and creative, tending to wear down defenses, but he needs to be able to finish.

For all you football experts, what are the chances that Russia has some sort of fix in here? (If they could win the US election, then why not the World Cup)

My wife and her family keep harping about Russian doping (running unnatural amounts) and the referees do seem to be giving them better calls.

But I'm no football expert.
