Shout out for Portland, OR

BJ

The Mme and I went to Portland several weekends ago, and had an unusually good time. The Rose garden was just past its peak, but was still pretty terrific. Tons of people there - a good sign of a city's culture that a flower garden is a major activity. The walk there is nice too, through a nice neighborhood.

Also discovered Vinopolis. Great selection and prices. We decided a Levet was a perfect picnic wine, so grabbed a '14, had big sandwiches made at City Market, and headed up the hill to smell the flowers and chug some Levet out of party cups.

Another highlight for the Mme in particular (she is a perfume fanatic) was the Perfume House. Somehow, we'd never discovered this despite being hard core Northwesterners. Tons of perfumes, old bottles, and tons of knowledge - half museum, half store. Worth the journey, if you like perfume.

Re food, the biggest shout out goes to Davenport, which has a ridiculously good wine list, perhaps the best I've ever seen, at reasonable prices. Great owner, great food, do not miss. Had a Julie Balagny MaV which made me think of what Roilette was made in a natural style - sort of a parallel universe sort of wine (and a wine highlight of the year). Worth the journey. Next time, we will just eat there every night and enjoy the list.

Pigeon was very good food wise, but we felt pretty rushed out for the next reservation, which literally walked in the front door and looked down at us - I'm sorry, if you spend $500 for two people on a dinner, I'd like to feel like you have more than a couple hours. Cool list though.

Little Bird has a bigger dining room, is cheaper, has as good a list, and we had an all round better time. Food not at heights of Pigeon of course. An haunting, sublime 85 Raffault Picasses was another wine of the year sorts.

For any birders out there, the Ridgefield NWR can be great. We were there last Spring, and off the SW walking path there were about a half dozen bitterns doing their breeding call, which was atmospheric.

There are really so few Portlanders or Portlandophiles that this thread yields no conversation?

One of the people who goes way back and posted on wine boards now lives in Portland, Hoke Harden. All around good guy who knows food & wine. Look him up in phone book if you're in Portland and need advice.

BJ, I wish I had known. We would have joined you for that D’port meal. Kurt is a great front of house host and Kevin has been cooking as good as ever. And the Pigeon/Little Bird guys’ wine bar next to Pigeon, Canard, has a better list than Davenport’s. Give a holler!

We're angling to get out to the PDX. Are you there most of the time?

OK, OK -- you've shaken me out of the woodwork; it's a nice sunny morning here in Azay-le-Rideau, and just about time to go buy cheese in Langeais. So this will have to be short.

B and I are loafing at our computers, while the women finish getting ready.

Next time folks are in Portland, drop me a line. We've lived there, oh, coming up on four years now. Though I'm currently spending a fair bit of time in Minneapolis for work, so my availability may be iffy.

I remember a great little jeeb with BJ and VLM and a tasting tray of oysters we put together in my kitchen. Sadly, PDX had no source of oysters that equals the original Uwajimaya, much less Taylor Shellfish.

Besides the chateau, try to visit Quentin Bourse at Le Sot de L'Ange, beautiful wines.

Thanks BJ! I'll be in Portland this coming weekend so your notes were very helpful.

The current plan is Davenport on Friday, Lovely's Fifty Fifty on Saturday, and Le Pigeon on Sunday. With frequent visits to Ambonnay in-between.

I'm with a group but we're all arriving separately so I might be solo Friday if any disorderlies would like to share a glass or three.

Kirk, Lee, et al, we will be back soon and definitely let you know prior. This was a little getaway with the Mme to commemorate a job transition; wanted to keep it chill. But we definitely whetted our appetite for another visit.

Oh, and a definite not recommended for the new Hi-Lo Hotel - located next to a 24/7 food truck area. No kidding, a 4am street brawl below our window Saturday night, and activity 'til dawn, at least Friday and Saturday. Portland, who knew? The best part about it is that they looked like total hipsters. It was pretty surreal.

Yes indeed. Or at least we’re here more than anywhere else. Let me know when your plans begin to gel!

Super late to this thread, but I love hearing people enjoying Portland.

VLM would love to connect if you make it out this way.

Lee no love for Flyong Fish oysters?

Also super late to this thread but glad you enjoyed that Levet, BJ, and I wish I knew who I was selling it to. I'd be very game for a Portland jeebus, but perhaps after harvest would work best...
