Wine and Memory Cont’d: NV Roederer Estate

As some of you might recall, a recent-ish visit to NYC was cut short when I was called out to CA to clean out the contents of my mothers house. Among the 6 truckloads of possessions we removed from there were a half dozen bottles of wine, some of which we one’s I’d been storing in her basement. Among this trove were the last two remaining bottles of the two cases of Roederer Estate fizz that I’d purchased in early 2015 for her memorial service. Last night we opened the last of those bottles on a hot, humid Midwest summer night, I had purchased these wines because they are crowd pleasers and available for a good price at the local BevMo, but after 3.5 years I was shocked at how appealing this unprepossessing fizz still was. The fruitiness of its youth had faded but it remained in excellent balance and had taken on more savory notes. In truth, it was far closer to its French kin than it had been earlier. To see how well a humble wine can evolve beyond all hope or expectation is a rare pleasure and one that my mother would have relished. We toasted her memory as we downed the bottle.

Cheers!

wish I'd been there! I have fond memories of dropping off wine for you at that address.

Hah! I recall conversing with her after you delivered a case there. She said “This nice young man stopped by...”

Hope you get as much of a chuckle out of that as I did.

Cheers!

Nice how wine brings out cascading memories like this. BTW, the current cuvee of NV Roederer Estate is very good.

I opened a bottle of the estate recently, touring through the locally-available, reasonably-priced fizz. I didn't like it very much - seemed too sweet initially, then came into focus briefly, then was just meh.

Naturally a different batch from the 2015, but I wouldn't rebuy, even at $20-ish.
