The $13.95 Miracle

$13.95. That’s what the price tag read on the 2009 Clos des Briords I drank last night. I bought it at the Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa on the advice of Florida Jim. I didn’t really know anything about Muscadet ta the time, but Jim told me it might outlive me. I bought three bottles and put them away. The one I drank last night, the first of them, was luscious. It had a wonderful lemon lime quality to it with a little richness to round out the acidity.

I probably have a case or so of Muscadet cellaring now from producers in the Loire and California. I am looking forward to drinking them over the years and will add to my stash on a regular basis.

I opened this a few times in the past four years. It's very inconsistent (premox?), but the best bottles were superb, memorable, and a great example of M in a ripe year.

The last one I opened, earlier this year, was still developing and drank best on the third day. Knock on wood, I've had pretty good luck vis-a-vis early oxidation.
