2004 Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie La Chavaroche

Pretty much everything I want Côte-Rôtie to be. The youthful red fruit and funky stemminess from a few years ago has now moved to the background, and it's all about more savoury smoky, olive-y, and gamey flavours with a bright floral topnote. It seems like it's just entering an awesome plateau of maturity. There's still a bit of grainy tannin on the back end and lots of bright acidity providing structure and suggesting there's no rush, but right now this is everything I could want from a bottle of aged Syrah.
 
I love 04 as well, perhaps a bit too much as I exhibited zero self control on my Allemands and drank the last of my Chaillots a couple of years ago. Eh, it was awesome.

Will have to dig up my '04 Faurie Hermitage soon, especially with more snowstorms hitting these parts...

I was underwhelmed by my recent interface with Allemand Chaillots bu tmaybe that was because of an insanely good bottle of 2005 that preceded it.

I think we discussed this before. I had ‘04 Chaillots three times last year. There was some bottle variation as two were singing and gorgeous and the third was good but not at the same level. One of the great bottles had no problem side by side with Marty’s amazing bottle of ‘99 SS at the Juge thing.

I've buried my 05 Chaillots in storage - found it so tannic a few years ago that I figured it would need a lot of time. Was the '05 more approachable/less structured then? I'm still somewhat hesitant to pop one and check (especially given how crazy Allemand pricing has gotten lately).
