Joe Perry is Back from Les Cantons de l'Est

Then let me explain. Your response is either funny because a) you're being insincere and thus pointing to the futility of joke explanation or b) you're being sincere and you're some kind of comic prophet. The tension between these extremes causes a layer of humor to build up like the gas in a shaken soda can. We know what will happen when some hapless soul stumbles along to open it.

So you're saying that Izzard is full of gas or that Aristophanes needs a seltzer? I'm a subscriber to the Mel Brooks rule of comedy: "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you walk into an open sewer and die." Nice dissection of the vid BTW. I veer more toward low comedy these days. Too much time spent with SJ Perlman books in my youth I suppose.

My daughter who is a fan of all things British loves Izzard so maybe he's an aquired taste.

Like escargot ice cream, no?

-Eden (probably palatable if there's enough hot garlic sauce dribbled atop it)

The Mel Brooks rule is funny because of the inflection in the reading - *my* finger vs. *you* falling into a sewer. That means that bad things happening to me - even minor ones - are no laughing matter. But the worst of things happening to you is a riot. Like escargot ice cream.

Where's Kane?

Present.

Just got back from my first jeebus of '09 with a visiting Christine Huang, whom you should know because she's a San Francisco treat and likes Bar Tartine!
Sounds good! I barely know her (my loss), but I was at one offline where I drank a 1988 Krug that she brought. I have been grateful ever since...

Of course it is. But isn't Izzard a clear comic descendant of Aristophanes (which is what I meant)?

You could say that about any comedian as Aristophanes is considered by many to be the father of comedy. What commedian does not use ridicule, satire and caricature to comic effect?

No love for Menander?
