Semi-suddenly: Buffalo

I'm going to be in Buffalo, NY for two nights in a few weeks. Any dinner/wine recommendations? I'll be staying at the Henry Hotel.

I grew up in Buffalo and can help. It is not a great culinary destination; however, it has improved over the past 2-3 years. The restaurant in your hotel is not bad and I think has a very reasonable corkage policy.

I had an amazing meal in December at a place called Las Puertas. You can see photos of my meal here:

I highly recommend this place and its 10 minutes from your hotel. Wine list was ok. There is a very good wine shop (Paradise) within walking distance that has a nice selection (for Buffalo). Corkage is around $15 at La Puertas.

A friend who used to be a top somm in NYC helped me compile the list below. The scene is changing so fast that I have not been to most of these places. Dapper Goose looked very good. I did go to Remedy House and had a nice breakfast.

Dinner:

Dapper Goose
Dobotsu (Great seafood)
Olivers - Buffalos oldest high end restaurant, a few good things on the wine list. Also about 10 minutes from your hotel
Tempo
Touton

Winebar:

The Little Club

Pizza:

Jays Artisan Pizza (wood burning oven pizza) - I did try this and thought it was very good, but not NYC good
Bocce Club (more old school)

Coffee:

Remedy House
Tipico

Cocktails:

Billy Club
Hotel Henry
Dobotsu

If you want to try local fair I would recommend trying Beef on Weck (Schwabl's, Charlie the Butcher), Submarine Sandwich and of course Wings

If fun to wine shop in Buffalo because there are lots of random things just sitting around on the shelves.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else.

Dapper Goose is legit. The owners came from a highly regarded cocktail bar/restaurant in Philadelphia.
I had a very good meal at Bacchus a couple years ago. They had old Raffault Chinon 'Les Picasses", I think i drank 1996 for around $75 if memory serves.
The people in Buffalo are impossibly nice too.

I am definitely going to try Dapper Goose on my next visit.

Beef on ‘wick, wherever it’s served.
Best, Jim

Is Pat’s on Sheridan Drive still in biz? Great dogs and truly HOT relish.
Always loved Buffalo . . . in the summer.
Best, Jim

Just got back from the Dapper Goose. Great place, really friendly people, I really enjoyed it. The blackened green beans with burnt onion aioli is absurdly delicious (large portion size alert). The house-made fettucine with mushroom "bolognese" is equally great, the ragu seriously rich and thrumming with tomato flavor. With these I had the 2016 Pignier Trousseau, which is sapid, sappy, and powerfully acidic - just thing right thing for these dishes.

I also grabbed a beef on weck for lunch at the Pearl Street Grill and Brewery, after ogling and boggling at Louis Sullivan's Guaranty Building masterpiece.
