SIL Pick of the Cellar

I gave our daughter and son-in-law the pick of the cellar and they chose the Ch Margaux '78 due to 1978 being his birth year.

Despite a thoroughly soaked cork (thank goodness for the Durand), the wine showed quite satisfactorily. As expected, quite evolved and soft but still maintaining its substance, including good fruit and length...just as might be expected from an aged Claret in an off year (and, I believe, the first year of the Mentzelopoulos take-over). Really a nice treat with grilled strip steaks and lentil salad.

Also had the Sandeman's Vintage Port with pecan balls. This very old Port was fairly light in color but definitely not lacking in structure and style.

A nice evening enhanced by the great company.

I found a bunch of this at a ridiculously low price many years ago toward the end of an auction and have enjoyed it but it is at best good not great. I still have a few and am not expecting any improvement.

Cole, I concur. Probably should drink it up at this point.

Like you I got mine at a very low price. A friend alerted me it was available upon release as a good buy locally; in fact, the price tag was still on the bottle...my SIL pointed out that it was $47.50.

Mine was actually (with the help of an auction house that liked me more than the seller) was bit less, some dozen years after release!

Cole, I wonder if provenance might have had a slight impact on how your auctioned bottle(s) showed!?!

any wine 41 years old is impacted by its provenance.

My wines were in good shape when I bought them in the 1990s and have been stored in temperature controlled professional cellars ever since. I recently tasted one with a Margaux rep (Pontallier's son) and there was general agreement that it was in fine shape.
