G Barthod 2008 Bourgogne 'Bons Batons'

Nice bright bricking red color upon opening (a couple of days after removal from cellar storage). Bouquet subdued but ferocious pink Pinot animal aromas and tight stones, closely held. Tasted over two days... mineral and tannic in my mouth after a short blast of musical fruit like violins at a distance. Still reserved and a bit tough but the form of prettiness is apparent, if distant. Moments of tough pleasure and hints of the music I associate with Bourgogne... Day two: the aromas relax a bit and music plays over a taut, not unlikeable mineral structure. Taste loosens slightly but remains like a distant lover.

Thanks for posting on this, Karen. I think I have a solitary bottle knocking about.

I had the '16 iteration recently, and I can see similarities in what you wrote about '08. The '16 benefited from some attention and analysis, but was plenty enjoyable.

I think Bon Batons is worth the $ and if given enough time, they really come around...Obviously, not as well as the Cras or Fuees or Veroilles or Charmes, but still my 5th fav. bottling from the producer and still good QPR.

Obviously, Mugnier CM-AC, Roumier CM are generally better...but at 5X the cost.

Ghislaine Barthod makes special wines IMO showing incredible value.

Domaine Philippe Leclerc Bourgogne Les Bons Batons Rouge, in my view, is a reliably good bottling over the years...and usually well priced.

How is she with the oak?

Oak: Deft. 20-25% depending on things/vintage/cru. I'm sensitive to oak intrusion and masking of cepage and terroir (per my own perceptions: my bias is against this) and I appreciate her touch. I met Ghislaine in 2007 at the fete des vins in Chambolle-Musigny and I was impressed by her energy, no-nonsense personality and sparkling intelligence in addition to the loveliness of her wines at the table. They stood out for me for their perfumes, life and musicality. She's been making wine for more than 30 years. Ghislaine uses natural yeasts. I remember her saying she liked the languid start to fermentation caused by natural yeasts (compared to commercial).
"Les Bons Batons" is a vineyard just the other side of the street from the Chambolle-Musigny delineation.... Some of her vines have 50-75 years' age.
I'm curious and patient.
