Freaking Precious

Dave’s a good dude. He’s been my mayor for a decade.

It’s been fascinating to see the reactions to Patterson’s death. It seems that many people that have reported on him over time saw him in a mainly positive light, yet the fact that so many have celebrated his demise speaks volumes.

This New Yorker piece pretty much has all you need to know about Patterson.

Thanks, guys. As a part-time Michigander, I need to get more of a lay of the land, politically-wise.

Thanks for all this. Having lived in Oakland County as a kid/teenager (‘79-88) —my mom even worked in the Sheriff’s Office for a bit in the 80s, spending significant time there in the 90s, and now visiting family and friends on occasion, there have been so many changes as the older generation who left Detroit in the late 60s are retired or gone, and a more inclusive cultural norm has made great strides.

Even relative liberals in Oakland County in the 80s weren’t so liberal in retrospect although that’s a broad generalization.

It wasn't a good time to be a liberal in the 80s (even the word was frowned upon) and liberals tried to moderate their beliefs to court the center (really Clinton was probably slightly to the right of Nixon domestically). It's worth keeping in mind that the 1930s-1970s were virtually the only mostly left of center period of politics in the US since the Grant administration and began the Conservative period of dominance, which I think will probably be viewed as, despite Trump, coming to an end with 2008. The current growth in more progressive beliefs is probably still a delayed reaction to 2009, to which Conservatives managed to mute the response. Since my prognostications are never great, however, feel free to write your own future.
