2009 Koehler Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Spätlese Trocken R

Have been holding onto this bottle for a few years and debating when to open. I suppose I could have waited longer but it was pretty darn delicious this weekend, so am not shedding any tears other than those of joy.

As expected, a lot was going on. Golden straw fruits that take on many many detailed shades (lemon, quince, apricot and persimmon were a few that came to mind) all the while balancing savory nutty and fresh lively presentation. The texture is no slouch either, so tender gentle and delicate, yet spherical, complete, layered and harmonious in the mouth.

Great match with herbed crab cakes, roasted mushrooms, broccolini and yellow peppers, and basmati rice.

Lots of winning going on.

One week later I go down the status hierarchy but still have lots of fun with the 2016 Koehler Ruprecht Pinot Noir kabinett trocken. A nice mouthful of luscious dark fleshy fruit but retains fresh juicy crisp definition. The flavors lean in that earthy vegetal spätburgunder direction, but not too much and the berry burg elements remain dominant.

Nothing complex but lovely fun. The type of wine I love to pop open, drink and relax, which would therefore be perfect for entertaining. Unfortunately, am not sure how much of a crowd pleaser this would be for my non-wine-geek set. But maybe I underestimate them and should give it a try.
