Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2019

Ooh, aah: click

It's a somewhat odd list: ((snip... I was reading the 2018 list... but I'm sure the 2019 is equally weird just with different particulars))

I guess this is what you get when you have a committee?

Ugh. I hate to see wines I like on this list. Seeing Huet, Baudry, Voge and Luneau-Papin on that list is not a pleasant sight to me. Luca will no doubt be thrilled at the sight of the Terlano PG on the list.

Actually isn’t a perfect opportunity for sniping?

For example, I hate to see my beloved Huet Le Mont DS on this list. But then to entertain myself, I ran a hypothetical conversation between WS consumer with list-in-hand and wine store salesperson.

Store Employee: Hi. I’m John. How can I help you?

Boob: Do you have the 2018 Huet Le Mont Demisec? It’s the 15th best wine of the year.

Store Employee: No, I’m sorry sir. We don’t have that one. We have the 2016 or we have the 2018 Clos du Bourg Demisec. Both excellent wines.

Boob: But those aren’t among the top 100 wines of the year though, right?

Store Employee: I’m not sure, sir. I don’t believe they are on the Wine Spectator list this year. I would have to check. But I can tell you that I’ve tried the 2016 and the 2018 Le Mont, and I think the 2016 is even better. And the Clos du Bourg is great too. Both Le Mont and Clos du Bourg are considered by most people who know these wines to be among the best Chenin Blanc vineyards in the world. I expect you would enjoy the ones we have.

Boob: Look. I appreciate you are trying to sell me what you have. But I’m really only interested in those other wines you named if they are Top 100 wines.

Store Employee: Sir, give me one minute to check on something .... Sir, I just verified on the WS website that the 2016 we have was the #6 Wine Spectator wine just two years ago.

Boob: Two years ago, huh? Isn’t the wine kind of old at this point?

Store Employee: Actually sir, these wines are known to live a very long time. Decades even. They are known for that.

Boob: And it was #6 you say. So even better that the 2018, which is only #15, right?! I’ll take a case.

[Next weeK: insert your version of infuriated Boob returning case minus one because the wine is “sweet”.]
