Thanks for the link, Jay. VftC is on my "to do" list for wine publications. One thing that I find curious about the otherwise very familiar tone of his post is his vehement criticism of screwcaps as "flawed" closures. I know of a few people who've got a lot of experience with older wines sealed under screwcap, and none of them report a serious reduction problem as John Gilman does. I wonder if he's overly sensitive to those reductive odors? Very curious...

Fatally flawed as it is used today" is the pertinent quote, and he is really railing against the way Aussie winemakers are prepping the wines (copper fining) to get ready for screwcaps as well.

I thought his commnets on the higher alcohol Austrian wines were right on the mark. I have a bunch from 2006 and they are not going to be laid down for long.
 
I like John, but I don't think that is a very good interview. Desert Island wine? What kind of stupid question is that?

It wasn't really a interview/discussion that held much interest for me.

I guess proximity to Thor has raised my perception of journalistic standards.
 
It actually isn't a good interview, but it sure has raised some hackles in certain circles.

On the screw cap front, I just read some of his 2007 German reviews, and he lambastes Christoffel for screw caps, so it's not just the Aussies. He's also got his timeline wrong on when Christoffel went to caps (they had an ill-fated plastic fetish in there), but that's a nit.
 
Just re-looking at a Gilman article during lunch, I am shocked than none of you have put out a hit on him for misusing varietal. He even switches between variety (correctly) and varietal (incorrectly) in the same paragraph.

I want to make it clear that I respect John's voice and views in all this. I just think that the interview is crappy.

I liked the article Jay linked here, but I've got to say that the other half of the interview made me wince. I don't like it when Parker gets personal instead of focusing on the wine -- I don't like it when Gilman does it, either.

I've been around the internets for a good while now, and that Leve guy may combine pompous and stupid in ways that are not yet understood. He is a national treasure.
