As pedantry is one of the few pursuits still available to the quarantined, I must insist that quarantine is Italian (https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarantena) and originated in Venice, a port town. The first quarantine was around the time of the black plague (1347). French had a word for forty days that referred to Lent, and only used the Italian sense (at least per Wiki here: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarantaine) in 1635.
