2018 Alex Foillard Brouilly

You're probably way ahead of me on this one, but the name only recently came across my radar. Apparently he has a few vintages under his belt, imported to US by KLWM and already charging higher prices than father Jean! I guess wine economics has its own logic.

I approached the bottle knowing that some friends have been enthusiastic, but I was still surprisingly impressed. It may not have been the best vintage to get a sense of the domaine, because it was so rich. But there was also plenty of freshness and silk. Very fun to drink. Someone to watch.

Anyone have more developed views? What about the Côte de Brouilly?
 
I posted about the Cote de Brouilly 2016 in 2018 (you even commented)

unless it has become more realistically priced, i wouldn't buy it again. Although i did think it was decent wine.

The 2018 Alex Foillard Brouilly was $48 before case discount, compared to $44 before case discount for Foillard CdP. In absolute terms I had a lot of fun with the Alex Foillard Brouilly, am looking forward to drinking more, and would consider buying again. But would probably depend on mood/other options. (Whereas with Descombes and Jean Foillard I never hesitate to buy what I can)

From reading about the style, I assumed the Alex Foillard CdB was the cheaper bottling, but maybe not.

That wine is $30 here in Norway (inclusive of 25% VAT), but Kermit has never had low markups, sometimes even astronomical.

In Covid sanctuary I suppose? Where in Norway may I ask? Yes, the markups in the US on some wines seem astronomical.

Where are you buying these? I passed on my allocation because, well, the restaurant is closed. I might be done with the allocated KL Beaujolais. I've been really impressed with both Suniers for about 30% less in a similar style.

Yes, have been impressed by Julien Sunier as someone to potentially follow in the future.

Surprised that Norway is somehow coming in as a Bargain Land. But we know that Kermit doesn't compete on price. A UK friend bought 2018 Alex Foillard Brouilly for 23euros.

And since we're talking about Beaujolais, same UK friend encouraged me to try the new name Pauline Passot. Any views here? I see they're imported by Weygandt and available in the northeast.

I second that opinion. The Foillard Jr. tariff compounded with the Kermit tariff prices the wine out much higher than what I think it's worth compared to other good Beaujolais.

As Oswaldo will confirm, almost all wines are cheaper in the EEC countries (referring to those that come from within the Union) than they are in Scandinavia. There are some US importers that have extremely high markups (plus there's that nasty 25% tariff, though we have 25% sales tax on wine + 3 or 4 other taxes). I think I remember seeing Duplessis Chablis on the CSW site at double what I pay.
 
I was very impressed with the Passot wines at a Weygandt tasting. I particularly liked the Morgan and the Chiroubles grille midi, but the whole line-up was strong.

The takeaway price for 2018 Alex Foillard Beaujolais Villages is 22 Euros at Prado (a local restaurant).

The problem is not limited to wine. I like the Spanish pinenuts sold by my local import/export shop (Sahadi's). Typical price is $48 - $53 a pound but, as of last week, the price is $90/lb. Chinese pinenuts are up about double, too, but I won't buy them.

I don’t know how people feel about the Chignard wines around here but their two Fleuries have really hit a sweet spot for me in recent vintages where some of my standby estates have disappointed. Lovely balance to them and they seem to preserve an elegance and crispness to the fruit even in warmer vintages.

I have really loved the ‘16 Chignard Fleurie. Haven’t had much experience with earlier vintages, sadly.

Another gorgeous bottle of 2018 Alex Foillard Brouilly, so juicy and succulent but also tactile and fine. Very very very easy to drink now.

Much more fun than a recent bottle of 2018 Domaine des Pothiers Côte Roannaise Domaine. The Pothiers was dark brambly and way too raw for me to really enjoy. There is a lot of 2018 wine packed in here, but the structure is layered and hints of elegance. When you consider the $22 price (half of the Foillard), it probably deserves a lot of credit and admiration for the quality. But the expression is too primary and does not have enough lift for me right now.
