Vacation '20

BJ
OK, I gotta admit - even with this crew I'm a bit embarrassed to admit this is one week's worth of wine for the Mme and I. And it doesn't even feel that wine soaked. Do note several of the bottles are mostly full.

Up on Lopez Island for two weeks. Ridiculously nice. Kayaking, biking, Patrick O'Brian, Robert Macfarlane, fantastic local farm produce/bread/etc..

IMG_1155.jpg
95 Chateau du Val D'or - somewhat indifferent Bordeaux, at least not very oaked. Definitely did not seem 25 y.o., I'd bet badge engineered.

16 A and M Quenard "Les Abymes" - really does taste a bit like an Alpine stream, somehow seemed to weather its plastique cork.

07 Grand Nicolet Rasteau VV - JLL proclaims this STGT; I proclaim it muddled, disturbing, heavy, etc. Nearly undrinkable. I remember the '00 vintage, which supposedly was the "ripe" vintage - but it was never like this. This is more Australian than anything.

17 J. Reverdy Sancerre "La Reine Blanches". Pretty good, some weight, yet crisp, pleasant on the beach.

14 Haut Medoc de Beychevelle. The horror. Undrinkable. I was lulled by happy memories of the Cordier era, but oh, no. No. Horrors, CENSORED wine, seemingly double oaked, ugh. DNPIM. Deeply, sadly, disturbing.

98 Druet Bourgeuil Grand Mont. This, on the other hand, has a bit of faerie dust, perfect for Lopez. There were two big Druet post-bankruptcy purchases by KL - the wine from purchase one ran from tingly to sublime, purchase two, disappointing to deeply disappointing. Thankfully, we still had a couple bottles of the former. This was more in the tingly category, but still...

97 Raspail-Ay Gigondas. I have previously waxed about this wine, this bottle unfortunately muddied by the drive up and unmitigated by my lack of patience, opened night one. Patience, Luke.

07 Mourgues des Gres "Les Galets Rouges" Another 07 hot stewed mess, again drive-muddied, and not that great to start with. This is the wine that made me think, I have never had an 07 S. French wine I've come close to liking.

96 Taluau St.NeB VV Last of many various vintages...these were all delish, and yet so very correct. It would have been nice to see what they would have been like with a bit of wild hair on.

09 Clos des Briords from mag This has been kicking around the locker and it was just time. Delightful aperitif over several days. The 09 richness came through which worked great, balanced with the Atlantic salinity that drives this wine. From another era, made me think of Marc, Joe, and Joe.

09 Brun Morgon Still a little muddied from trip unfortunately, plus I don't think decanting helped this. A bit plummy. Previous bottle of this was pretty terrific.

17 Lavantaraux Chablis. From a local shop, all the breeding was there, but this shop gets hot and I think this stood up for two summers, not helpful, a dryish cork. You make do.

98 Font-Sane Gigondas. Definitely OTH, starting to madeirize, but did well in the stew with local lamb.

99 Druet Chinon Clos des Lanzay part of tranche 2, worst of it, went into same lamb stew, somehow two wines together = something good.

17 Collotte Bourgogne Rouge "Cuvee des Nobles Souches" From local organic grocery story, really terrific and pure. I'm a big fan of Collotte and this confirmed it. No pretence, no oak, just nice, simple, pure.

17 Pascal Aufranc Chenas "Vignes des 1939" We have probably had a dozen vintages of this, always a super value. A bit blocky, but cru pure.

18 Bernier Chardonnay You see this pop up everywhere, it's a Loire Chardonnay, super cheap, and hey! it's ok.

Bless you all and I encourage you all to figure out a way to take a break. It's hell out there.

Badge engineering is an automotive term where a manufacturer with several subsidiaries simply puts a different nameplate on the same car, and sometimes a minor facelift, and sells it as a totally different car.

So the analog doesn't hold here - in my case I meant that I thought perhaps they took a younger vintage and put a '95 label on it - this was a current back library release from the domaine. Perhaps unfair though.

Seems like a vacation well spent.

We scrolled on our yearly Estes Park extended fambly vacation this year, sending our almost 17 year old high school grad in our place. It just didn't seem like a good time to go on vacation. Need to make a point of grabbing Clos de Briords mags (privelige of distroing LDM in Iowa) so I can stash some in the basement at some point.

Cheers!

If it's '14 or '17, grab me one, too.

Ooh, Beej. You and Madame are thirstee ones!

These vineyards are owned by Beychevelle but they are 5 km away and not even in St Julien. On the other hand, I suppose you didn't pay Grand Vin prices.

98 Druet Bourgeuil Grand Mont...
I like Druet so good to read this note.

Sorry to read about yet more hit-and-miss with this bottling.

Om mani padme om.
Always on staycation.

You should try to make it over to Orcas and pick up some takeout from Jay at Hogstone for a picnic! Glad to see you got out of the city for a bit.

Over on Orcas today, drove straight by Hogstone, it was closed. I felt a bit of a pang.

Honestly, I'm just all over the Lopez produce, meat, and Barn Owl bread. Brian, did you know Nathan and Sage now have 50 acres of wheat under cultivation on Lopez? It blows my mind.

Finally hit a solid triple - the 16 Pierre Bise Savennieres Clos le Grand Beaupreau. This wine is so dang good! Blind I would have said a Belleviere Eparses, which really means something in my book.

The 97 Cayron yesterday was all on.

The 18 Pibarnon rose today could have been a $10 Provencal rose.

16 L Michel Butteaux was on at least for a while. I may have over decanted it to address reduction.

Superb kayaking the last while. Pretty challenging currents around the San Juans, but if you attend to the tides they work in your favor.

Meaning there was good mineral cut and depth? The few times I've tried PB wines in recent years they have been very rounded and ripe without enough edges for my ideal tastes.

BTW Jeff, not sure I would dis the 09 Brun Morgon. I think it just didn't like the drive up here.
I did have a good bottle of it relatively recently, but you're right that I was confusing it for that awful '06 that we had.

Ooh. I remember how great that dinner with Brad was but had forgotten how good the ensuing thread was. Was that only 2 years ago?

Many, many calories. I'm envious.

I think I have an 09 Briords magnum or three; time to dig one out.

How long do you like to hold Brun Morgon & Moulins?

Cheers.

I'd put this somewhere in the middle. Definitely some sparkle and thrust. Premier/grand cru energy.

...., Patrick O'Brian, Robert Macfarlane, ....

I’ve read most of O’Brian’s work and considered rereading them partly in memory of a friend’s passing that introduced me to him sometime ago but MacFarlane... as the kool kidz say, “Next level”. I’ve started with “Underland”, just devastating...

Thank you for this.
