Looks to me like it hit almost squarely on the cork. My guess is that it sheared off the top high on the neck, turning it into a projectile aimed back at the thrower. You see the same thing when the regulator is sheared off a compressed gas cylinder, turning the cylinder into something closely resembling a torpedo.
